Gradient Index Waveguide for High Energy Laser

(Developed for Defense Contractor)

Developed a deposition system and process using two Nd:YAG powders having different refractive indices. The system deposited controlled amounts of each powder to create a layer of uniform thickness. Additional powder is deposited to create a thick part with protective sides to facilitate handling. After the part is compressed and fired it forms a section with a controlled variation in refractive index from end to end. Parts up to 36” long can be made using this system.
